• Was interim manager of the San Diego Padres in 2015, replacing Bud Black on 6/16/15.....went 42-54 (.438)
• Managed at Class-A Eugene (2011-12), Triple-A Tucson (2013) and Triple-A El Paso (2014-15) while in the Padres organization.....went 273-230 (.543)• Posted the top record in the Northwest League in both 2011 (46-30) and 2012 (47-29) while at Class-A Eugene• Spent the 2010 season as special assistant to baseball operations for the Padre


• Enjoyed a 25-year head coaching career spent primarily at the University of Notre Dame (1988-94) and Arizona State University (1995-2009).....went 947-400-2 (.703) at those schools
• Was on pace to become the winningest coach in NCAA history at the time he transitioned into coaching in the professional ranks.....finished at 1000-457-4 (.686)
• Went 318-116-1 (.732) at Notre Dame and 629-284-1 (.689) at Arizona State.....earned 1998 National Coach of the Year honors after leading the Sun Devils to the National Championship game
• Was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year three times (1989-90, '92) and PAC-10 Coach of the Year four times (2000, 2007-09)
• Coached current Brewers manager Craig Counsell at Notre Dame from 1989-92
• Was head coach at Division-III Maryville College (1983) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (1986-87), going 53-57-2 (.482)
• Was the assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University from 1984-85


• Pitched in the minor leagues with the Giants (1982) and Padres (1983) organizations

• Pitched professionally in Australia for Sydney (1984) and in the Northwest League with Tri-City (1985-86), where he served as a player-manager in 1986


• Has a daughter named Keli and two sons, Kai and Austin
• Graduated from Christian Brothers (NY) Academy, where he played football, basketball and boxed in addition to playing baseball
• Graduated from Florida Atlantic University, where he also pitched• Coached the Dutch Olympic team in the 2000 Sydney Games
• Is the father-in-law of first baseman Pedro Alvarez
