Braun named NL Player of the Week
Capping off a memorable week in which he batted .480 and signed a contract extension to keep him in Milwaukee through the 2020 season, Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun has been named National League Player of the Week.

In six games through April 24, Braun went 12-for-25 with three homers and nine RBIs. While continuing to reach base in each of the Brewers' 21 games this season, the three-time All-Star also ranked second in the league with his .840 slugging percentage. Braun posted an OPS of 1.373 for the week.

And on Thursday he agreed to a five-year, $105 million contract extension to his current deal, which ran through 2014.

In his first game after signing that pact, Braun went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs in Milwaukee's 14-7 victory over the Astros.

For Braun, who shares the Major League lead with seven home runs and 21 runs, this weekly award is the third of his career. The 2007 NL Rookie of the Year was also singled out for the weeks ending May 11, 2009, and Aug. 8, 2010.

Others considered for the honor include a couple of Braun's teammates: Prince Fielder (.458) and left-hander Randy Wolf (2-0, 0.64 ERA in 14 innings).

Other noteworthy performances during the week belonged to a quartet of Cardinals: outfielder and last week's honoree Lance Berkman (.588, .824 slugging percentage), first baseman Albert Pujols (three homers, seven RBIs), right-hander Kyle Lohse (1-0, a complete-game shutout) and reliever Mitchell Boggs (0.00 ERA, three saves).

Third baseman Casey Blake (.370, 10 runs), outfielder Andre Ethier (.393) and infielder Juan Uribe (.450-2-9) -- all of the Dodgers -- were also considered, as were Giants outfielder Pat Burrell (.429, 9 hits, one HR); first baseman Ike Davis (.381, three homers) and third baseman David Wright (.286-3-6) of the Mets; Cubs outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (.526 average, .591 on-base percentage); and Marlins ace Josh Johnson (1-0, 0.64 ERA).
