Brewers at the plate: Rickie Weeks and Matt LaPorta each had a hit and a stolen base. Mike Rivera drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Vinny Rottino led off the eighth with a home run off Rockies left-handed reliever Chris George.
Rockies at the plate: The Rockies didn't manage a hit until Matt Holliday's leadoff double in the fifth inning, and Holliday gave the Rockies the lead for good on a towering two-run shot to left off Scott Cassidy (0-1) in the seventh. Todd Helton doubled ahead of Holliday's homer, and Brad Hawpe added an RBI triple during the four-run inning.
Brewers on the mound: Starter Ben Sheets was perfect, and lightning fast, in his two innings, with five of his six outs coming on grounders. Left-hander Zach Jackson walked one in two no-hit innings.
Rockies on the mound: Right-hander Jason Hirsh, in his first Major League action since suffering a fractured fibula on a line drive against the Brewers last Aug. 7, pitched two scoreless innings and struck out one, while giving up two hits and a walk. Lefty Franklin Morales, pitching for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, gave up a leadoff hit in the third inning but retired the other six batters he faced, with two strikeouts. Greg Reynolds, the 2006 No. 1 Draft pick, gave up a leadoff single in the fourth, but forced a double-play grounder and faced six batters in his two innings. Darren Clarke (1-0) gave up a run on two hits but struck out one in the seventh.
Cactus League records: Rockies 2-1, Brewers 1-2.
Up next: The Rockies have split-squad games Sunday, with the club playing host to the Mexican National Team at Hi Corbett Field and also playing at Phoenix Municipal Stadium against the Athletics. Against the Mexican club, No. 1 starter Jeff Francis and reliever Luis Vizcaino will be the featured pitchers, with Willy Taveras, Helton, Holliday and Hawpe in the lineup. Against the Athletics, Josh Towers and Mark Redman will continue their bids to push their way into the starting rotation. Troy Tulowitzki and Garrett Atkins are the featured position players.
The Brewers will play at Maryvale Baseball Park against the Angels, with Brewers righty Carlos Villanueva starting against Angels righty Jon Garland.
