Brewers will wait to make most cuts

PHOENIX -- Brewers officials met for the first time Monday night to discuss roster decisions, but don't expect a huge wave of cuts just yet.

"We have the smallest camp in all of baseball," said manager Ned Yost. "We don't have to make cuts now. ... We have two weeks left and we still have to protect ourselves at the end of games."

The team on Tuesday optioned injured catcher Lou Palmisano to Triple-A Nashville, a day after announcing he would miss the first half of the season following left knee surgery. Palmisano underwent a procedure Tuesday in Milwaukee to repair torn cartilage. He will return to Phoenix on Wednesday to begin range of motion exercises.

Palmisano's departure left 46 players in Brewers camp. The team started with just 49 players -- compare that to the Nationals' 71 -- but had already been pared by two after Mark DiFelice was slow to recover from a knee injury and Scott Cassidy retired after two poor outings.

With pitchers and position players working deeper into games, playing time is beginning to get a bit tight. Tuesday was the first day that the Brewers did not need to borrow a pitcher or two from Minor League camp. In fact, with the starters working deeper into games, Yost needs innings more than arms and will send five big leaguers over to Minor League camp on Wednesday to get in some work.

"Everybody is playing in my camp," Yost said. "When you make cuts, you cut young guys that aren't playing."

Eventually, that will happen. Yost enjoys the series of meetings to debate the roster, and said that he gathers information from as many sources as possible before making decisions.

"Sometime before April 1 there will probably be one or two guys thrown in there," Yost said.
