Hart, Counsell, Kendall shine for Crew

Hart, Counsell, Kendall shine for Crew

|
A's 3, Brewers 3 (10 innings)
at Maryvale Baseball Park, Phoenix
Feb. 25

A's at the plate: Travis Buck hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the fifth inning after Bobby Crosby put the A's on the board with a solo shot in the second, but the Brewers rallied back in the eighth to forge a tie in the traditional Cactus League opener between the two teams that play spring home games in the Phoenix city limits.

Brewers at the plate: Craig Counsell led the way with three hits, and right-fielder Corey Hart and catcher Jason Kendall collected two hits apiece for the Brewers, including Hart's solo home run in the fourth inning. Brad Nelson and Chris Duffy hit consecutive RBI singles in the eighth inning to tie the game at 3, Duffy's hit coming after former Brewer Joe Dillon missed a popup foul off third base. But the Brewers stranded runners in scoring position in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings and settled for a tie.

A's on the mound: Josh Outman started and blanked the Brewers, giving up one hit in his two innings of work. Gio Gonzalez followed and surrendered two hits, including Hart's opposite-field home run, but otherwise held Milwaukee in check. Vin Mazzaro was in line for the win after an inning of scoreless relief, but Jerry Blevins was charged with two runs in the eighth.

Brewers on the mound: Jeff Suppan started Milwaukee's spring opener and worked around a single in a scoreless first inning before Crosby went deep in the second. Dave Bush, who won't make his first Cactus League start until the Brewers' fifth game, tuned up with a 1-2-3 third inning in relief of Suppan, and Trevor Hoffman made his unofficial Brewers debut with a scoreless seventh. Lindsay Gulin worked two scoreless innings.

Cactus League records: A's 0-0-1; Brewers 0-0-1

Up next: The A's will be back on the road on Thursday for their first Arizona matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Glendale, Ariz. Sean Gallagher will start for Oakland against right-hander Jordan Walden. The Brewers will also hit the road for a preview of their April 10 home opener against the Cubs. This game will have decidedly less juice, with Yovani Gallardo working against Cubs lefty Sean Marshall. It's the first of three Spring Training matchups between the Brewers and Cubs and the only one in Mesa.
