Brewers' No. 1 prospect Jimmy Nelson threw seven scoreless innings Monday, but a late comeback thwarted his bid for a fourth straight victory and Triple-A Nashville lost to Memphis, 2-1.
Nelson, ranked No. 65 on MLBPipeline.com's Top 100 Prospects list, struck out four batters, walked two and scattered four hits. He hasn't given up a run in 21 2/3 innings, a streak that dates back to June 21.
After a shaky first inning that saw Nelson balk and load the bases on a single and two walks, he settled down and cruised through the rest of his outing. He faced two batters over the minimum the rest of the way and finished his outing having thrown just 83 pitches.
Nelson is 10-2 with a 1.46 ERA in 16 games this season. He has struck out 114 batters and walked 32 in 111 innings. He leads the Pacific Coast League in ERA, strikeouts and innings pitched.
Last week, Nelson was named to the PCL All-Star Team that will take on the International League squad in the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 16 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Nelson will be the starting pitcher in the game, which begins at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on MLB Network.
