PROFESSIONAL COACHING CAREER: Derek Johnson is in his first season in the organization...on 11/2/18 was named pitching coach on new manager David Bell's Major League staff...spent the previous 3 seasons in the same position with the Brewers...Mil's cumulative team ERA of 3.94 ERA over the 2016-2018 seasons was the fourth-best in the National League in that span behind the Dodgers (3.49), Cubs (3.58) and Nationals (3.81) and eighth-best in the Major Leagues...in 2018, Brewers pitchers established franchise records for strikeouts in a season (1,428) and lowest opponents' batting average (.233)...the previous club record for lowest opponents' BA in a season was .246 (2011)...in 2017, the Brewers' 3.54 ERA from 7/28 through the remainder of the season (58g) ranked third in the Major Leagues in that span behind only the Indians (2.67) and Yankees (3.50)...in 2016, from 8/22 through the remainder of the season (39g) Brewers pitchers posted a 3.13 ERA, the best in the Major Leagues...for 3 seasons from 2013-2015, in his first professional coaching position was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Chicago Cubs.

COLLEGE COACHING CAREER: From 2002-2012 was the pitching coach at Vanderbilt University...in his last 3 seasons with the Commodores also served as associate head coach...was National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2004 and National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010...in 2011 helped lead Vanderbilt to its first College World Series appearance, guiding a staff that featured 8 pitchers who were selected in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft...also coached at Eastern Illinois University (1994), Southern Illinois University (1995-1997) and Stetson University (1998-2001)...as a college coach, mentored 13 pitchers who have appeared in the Major Leagues, including Jason Frasor (Southern Illinois), Lenny DiNardo (Stetson), Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt), Jensen Lewis (Vanderbilt), Mike Minor (Vanderbilt), David Price (Vanderbilt), Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt), Nick Christiani (Vanderbilt), Taylor Hill (Vanderbilt), Drew Verhagen (Vanderbilt), Caleb Cotham (Vanderbilt), Drew Hayes (Vanderbilt) and Matt Buschmann (Vanderbilt)...helped produce 6 first round/supplemental first round draft picks, including Jeremy Sowers (6th overall, Cle, 2004), David Price (1st, TB, 2007), Casey Weathers (8th, Col, 2007), Mike Minor (7th, Atl, 2009), Sonny Gray (18th, Oak, 2011) and Grayson Garvin (59th, TB, 2011).

PERSONAL: Graduated from University High School in Normal, Illinois...attended Lakeland (FL) Junior College from 1989-1991 before graduating from Eastern Illinois University in 1994...in 1993 was All Mid-Continent Conference as a lefthanded pitcher...in 2012 authored The Complete Guide To Pitching...wife's name is Tasha...they have a son, Teague, and a daughter, Taite.
