Derek Johnson


Begins his third season as Brewers pitching coach.....was named to his position on 11/2/15, replacing Rick Kranitz... His staff posted a 4.00 ERA last season, which ranked ninth in the Major Leagues and fifth in the National League.....their 3.54 ERA from 7/28 through the remainder of the season (58g) ranked third in the majors, trailing only Cleveland (2.67) and New York-AL (3.50)... From 8/22/16 through the remainder of the 2016 season (39g), the Brewers posted a 3.13 ERA, best in the Major Leagues... Was Cubs minor league pitching coordinator from 2013-15.


Enjoyed 11 seasons as the pitching coach at Vanderbilt University from 2002-12...served as associate head coach in addition to pitching coach over his final three seasons at the school... Was named National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2004 and National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010... Helped lead Vanderbilt to its first College World Series appearance in 2011, guiding a staff that featured eight pitchers who were selected in the First-Year Player Draft... Also coached at Eastern Illinois University (1994), Southern Illinois University (1995-97) and Stetson University (1998-2001)... Guided the collegiate careers of 13 pitchers who have played in the Major Leagues: Jason Frasor (Southern Illinois), Lenny DiNardo (Stetson), Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt), Jensen Lewis (Vanderbilt), Mike Minor (Vanderbilt), David Price (Vanderbilt), Sonny Gray (Vanderbilt), Nick Christiani (Vanderbilt), Taylor Hill (Vanderbilt), Drew Verhagen (Vanderbilt), Caleb Cotham (Vanderbilt), Drew Hayes (Vanderbilt) and Matt Buschmann (Vanderbilt)... Produced six first round/supplemental first round draft picks: Jeremy Sowers (6th overall, Cle, 2004), David Price (1st, TB, 2007), Casey Weathers (8th, Col, 2007), Mike Minor (7th, Atl, 2009), Sonny Gray (18th, Oak, 2011) and Grayson Garvin (59th, TB, 2011).


Is married.....wife's name is Tasha.....the couple has a son named Teague and a daughter named Taite... Graduated from University (IL) High School... Attended Lakeland Junior College from 1989-91 before graduating from Eastern Illinois University in 1994.....the former lefty pitcher earned All Mid-Continent Conference honors in 1993... Authored The Complete Guide to Pitching in 2012, a book on pitching instruction.
